The Association Jean Monnet, formerly the “Association des amis de Jean Monnet”, was founded in 1986 by former Jean Monnet collaborators. Its initial purpose was to keep alive the memory of Jean Monnet and to bring to life the Maison-musée Jean Monnet, located in Houjarray in the Yvelines, and owned by the European Parliament since 1982.
In 2016, Jean Monnet’s family withdrew from the Association Jean Monnet, and in 2018, the European Commission and then the Ile de France region withdrew their financial support for the association. The European Parliament then took over the management and running of the Maison Jean Monnet, which has since been expanded to include a conference center and accommodation facilities.
As the Association Jean Monnet is no longer active on a regular basis, the Institut Jean Monnet, created with the support of Jean Monnet’s family in 2021, is responsible for disseminating Jean Monnet’s work and thought, in collaboration with the Fondation Jean Monnet in Lausanne, custodians of Jean Monnet’s public archives.
