On October 18, 2023, at the initiative of the Institut Jean Monnet and the EU Representation in Washington, a commemorative plaque was placed on the house where Jean Monnet lived with his family during the Second World War. His efforts to mobilize American industry for the war, at Churchill’s request, made Roosevelt’s Victory Program possible. The great economist John Maynard Keynes said of Jean Monnet’s action in Washington during the war that it probably shortened it by a year.
The commemorative plaque bears these words:
“Jean Monnet, a founding father of the European Union, lived in this house from 1941-1945. He played an important part in America’s World War II victory program and was a relentless advocate of strong transatlantic partnership.”
