Franco-German friendship takes center stage on July 14

On July 14, 2026, Jean-Marc Lieberherr Monnet, president of the Jean Monnet Institute, was invited by the Bareiss family to speak at the Hotel Bareiss in the Black Forest during an event celebrating Franco-German friendship.

In his speech, he highlighted the visionary role played by Konrad Adenauer, Robert Schuman, and Jean Monnet in launching European unification, which was founded on Franco-German reconciliation. In 1950, five years after the war, France and Germany, along with four other European countries, chose to break with a century of conflict and build a new form of cooperation.

He called on French and German leaders to rekindle today that spirit of initiative, responsibility, and commitment to the common good—one that is commensurate with the challenges facing Europe.
