Jean Monnet and Konrad Adenauer: A Meeting at the Adenauer House

On July 13, 2026, Jean-Marc Lieberherr visited the Adenauer House in Rhöndorf—the former residence of Konrad Adenauer—accompanied by two of his grandsons, Konrad and Patrick Adenauer, as well as members of the Sovereign Europe Forum’s board.

This visit provided an opportunity to explore this historic site and to reflect on the legacy of the first chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Jean-Marc Lieberherr also spoke about Jean Monnet’s work and vision, focusing in particular on the ties between the two men and their commitment to European integration.

Following that meeting, he came across a speech delivered by Jean Monnet in tribute to Konrad Adenauer on July 2, 1966, a few months before the chancellor’s death. In it, Monnet emphasized the need to avoid repeating “the mistakes of the past” and to build a Europe based on cooperation rather than on relationships of domination.
