Jean Monnet at the Council on Foreign Relations: The Timeless Relevance of a Vision Rooted in Unity

On March 9, 2026, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) hosted a screening in New York of the documentary *Jean Monnet, Europe’s Adventurer*, co-written by Jean-Marc Lieberherr, founding president of the Jean Monnet Institute, and historian Éric Roussel.

The screening was followed by a discussion moderated by Leah Pisar, with CFR members Rudina Hajdari and Benjamin L. Schmitt, focusing on Jean Monnet’s vision and actions.

At the heart of the discussions was a particularly timely message: in a world where some prioritize power struggles and national interests, peace and prosperity remain inextricably linked to unity, collective action, and common institutions grounded in the rule of law. This legacy serves as a reminder of just how essential determination and imagination are to bringing the European project to life.
