Jean Monnet at the Council on Foreign Relations: The Enduring Relevance of a Vision Based on Unity

On 9 March 2026, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) hosted a screening in New York of Jean Monnet, the Adventurer of Europe, a documentary co-written by Jean-Marc Lieberherr, Founding President of the Institut Jean Monnet, and historian Éric Roussel.

The screening was followed by a discussion moderated by Leah Pisar, with Rudina Hajdari and Benjamin L. Schmitt, CFR term members, exploring the relevance of Jean Monnet’s vision and actions today.

At the heart of the discussion was a particularly timely message: in a world where some favour power politics and narrow national interests, peace and shared prosperity remain inseparable from unity, collective action and common institutions governed by the rule of law. Monnet’s legacy is a reminder of the importance of determination and imagination in sustaining the European project.
